Have we been worrying too hard about the unpopularity of gardening among younger generations? Perhaps, according to a recent study by the Garden Writers Association Foundation. Its recently released 2010-2011 Winter Gardening Trends Research Report indicates includes some heartening news. For instance, for those in the 25 to 40 age bracket:
• 64% grow or take care of plants – just slightly below the 66% average for the entire population.
• Flowers and vegetables are grown in nearly equal numbers. 62% reported they grow flowers, while 61% grow vegetables and herbs.
• Gardening’s greatest appeal for this age group is a sense of satisfaction, as reported by 71% the 25- to 40-year-olds surveyed.
Our own experience falls right in line with the survey results. Many of our clients have had a surge of first-time customers in the last two years. As a result, we’ve modified websites, catalog copy and enewsletters to help educate these newcomers. Perhaps we can all stop worrying and start concentrating on helping our newbie gardeners become more successful.
